Building self confidence
Back to News at Oatmeal full list
10th April 2007How would you define a confident person? This is a very difficult question to answer for many people. Our perception of who is a confident person can often be totally flawed. Many people have an “Outer fake persona” of confidence that they use to fool those around them. This can be effective in the short term when you deal with people you do not know very well. When using this “fake” confidence you can make others believe you are capable of anything and are someone for them to emulate. However, the veneer of confidence can wear thin when it is not part of the “inner you”. This can then erode your confidence further when you are foundto lack the qualities of a confident person. The aim of our confidence building workshop is to increase the “inner confidence” of a person.
When only being in possession of an “Outer fake persona” of confidence you waste energy by struggling to make others believe this is the true you. By increasing your “inner confidence” you can use this wasted energy to find ways to achieve more from life.
Changing Society
Today people’s lives are extremely busy, we are bombarded by the media to perform to a high standard in all aspects of our lives and become “super beings”. We are castigated if we do not live up to the expected standard in parenting, fashion, physical appearance or work achievement. This constant pressure has a huge impact on our confidence levels. People often enjoy boasting about their successes not caring that this makes others feel a failure and knocks confidence in their own ability. We need to be more accepting of the differences between individuals and mindful that not everyone has the same needs, goals or ambitions. We need to ask ourselves “am I happy” if the answers “yes” be pro-active, and spread your happiness by encouraging others to be confident. Confidence increases by receiving genuine praise from others – so start praising. If your answer is “No”, reflect on what makes you unhappy, talk to others about how you can change your life, and find the confidence to change.
Are you a confident person:
Are you:
- Able to communicate with confidence to all
- Confident of your own ability
- Comfortable with your own weaknesses and flaws
- Able to say “no” easily
- Never taken advantage of
If you answer “no” to these questions, then reflect upon the situations in your life that cause you problems. Think of solutions that are practical and you are comfortable to carry through. Most of all make a list of your strengths and abilities and remember these when doubting your own ability.
