wibf Presents - Raise your Game, the language of leadership, Lloyds TSB, London, 2006
Effective communication is an essential business skill. It is no use having great ideas if you can’t get people to buy in to them or knowing how to solve a problem if you can’t get your point across to the rest of the team or your boss. Yet most people think "communication is easy." We disagree. Talking is easy; communication, which means an exchange or communion with another, requires greater skill. An exchange that is a communion demands that we listen and speak skilfully, not just talk mindlessly, and interacting with fearful, angry, or frustrated people can be even more difficult, because we're less skilful when caught up in such emotions. Yet don't despair or resign yourself to a lifetime of miscommunication at work or home! Good communicators can be honed as well as born.
So how do you captivate, entertain or educate your colleagues, boss or business partners? How did the great leaders of the past create such evocative and memorable speeches without the use of Powerpoint? In this 90 minutes workshop we will explore:
-
The structure of great 21st century speeches – why do we continue to talk about them?
-
Passionate, evocative words, and their motivational effects – which words to use and when to use them; and
-
How to get attention and aid memory retention.
This is a highly interactive seminar run by John Davies, a Partner of The Oatmeal Group, a company that specialises in delivering communication courses to leading business schools and blue chip corporates. In this workshop you will discover:
-
How to use the right language to motivate your team or peers;
-
How to promote yourself in a positive way;
-
How to be aware of RSVP; Rhythm, Speed, Voice, Pitch;
-
How to convince your client that your product/service is right for them;
-
And, above all, how to make your point simply and effectively regardless of your audience.
To quote Rudyard Kipling ‘Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind’, true; but only if administered in the right dosage for the right affliction.
